I haven’t been able to find any other threads discussing this, I too refuse to use Gab without protections in place. Was on Gab since 2017 and have watched Torba struggle and win in most cases but also watched him slip over the edge over the past 2 years. Ah well: It was fun while it lasted.
So, either we post without a vpn, and thus gab knows our ip address, or we pay for pro, and gab knows who we are. I am suspicious of the explanation on gab.news, and refuse to play. If they remove the restriction, I may return, but I refuse to expose my location. No other websites (well, almost none of them) have this block in place. It's not necessary, therefore something else is up. Thank you for your comment!
I look for Torba to backtrack on this, just like he did with only pro users being able to upload graphics. In the mean time I've already seen many good people have left, such as yourself.
I also think that a VPN gives people a false sense of security. The feds are tracking child porn traffickers and others back to their IP addresses easily and quickly, even though they use bit torrent and VPNs. Hackers are like burglars, you can slow them down and discourage them, but you can't really stop them if they're determined to get what they're looking for.
So I don't believe the feds need Torba's help to find any personal details they want about anyone. But I understand your concerns, and if you're leaving gab I'll miss you, like I will several others who have announced they're leaving.
